Back-to-School Estate Planning for College Students

At the start of the summer, we shared important information for parents and grandparents with loved ones turning 18. These estate planning tips are especially important to consider as students head to college this September.

Back-to-School planning can be a whirlwind, and while this planning typically involves stocking up on bulk cases of ramen noodles and extra-long sheets, it should also include a real conversation about what it means to be eighteen and away from home (most likely, for the first time).

Your eighteen-year-old child or grandchild may be so excited to start their college experience, that they may not be aware of how their changing legal status will impact them in a variety of ways. Read more.

Elder Care and Medical Marijuana in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Act for the Humanitarian Medical Use of Marijuana (Medical Marijuana Law) took effect on January 1, 2013, legalizing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes and exempting individuals with qualifying medical conditions from being penalized under Massachusetts law for marijuana use.

To become a “qualifying patient,” a doctor, licensed in Massachusetts, must have diagnosed the patient as having a debilitating medical condition such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, HIV or AIDs. Other conditions are reviewed on a case by case basis. As one gets older, the proclivity to chronic illness increases, making many older adults candidates for this treatment option. With so many elderly adults residing in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, it is interesting to consider how the use of medical marijuana will be handled in these instances. Read more.

"It's Not About the Nail"

Sometimes it can seem like men and women have trouble communicating.  While this may be difficult or impossible to avoid, it can be made more bearable by taking the time to laugh every once in a while.  This video by Jason Headley may just do the trick.  Watch the video here.

On Friday, April 5th, Attorney Jon Fields was elected to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (MA-AFCC).  Mr. Fields has always been deeply involved in the family law arena, and he has over 22 years of experience representing clients.  Family law can be a complex area, but one that Mr. Fields is passionate about handling with compassion and innovative solutions.

The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts is an interdisciplinary and international association dedicated to family conflict resolution.  Members of the AFCC include judges, lawyer, mediators, psychologists, academics, psychiatrists and social workers, among others.

The Massachusetts Chapter was created in 1993.  Its purpose is to provide an opportunity to open up a dialogue and exchange ideas on ways to improve the procedures in place to help families in conflict.   It seeks to improve court procedures by introducing more collaborative system of dispute resolution. One of the main goals of the AFCC and the Massachusetts chapter is to protect the interests of children in all facets of family law.
